Burning Your Body to be Accepted

March 18, 2009

People all around the whole go to extreme measures to be accepted by others. Often times these measures involve harmful things to the body. Someting that people do to be accepted and some people consider it beautiful is human branding
Human branding is a process is which someone marks there skin with a symbol or ornamental pattern. This mark is burned into the skin of the person. This burn is meant to leave a permanent scare. Human branding is performed with either cold or hot ironvere social pressure.

brandinhGangs and other groups of people use branding as a initiation process. People will go to great extremes to be accepted in groups and to feel loved by others. A lot of times they feel that they must perform these harmful procedures to be accepted and wanted. Often times this human branding is seen when males bond. Fraternities will sometimes have human branding. Some people consider human branding as mutalating your body while others see it as body decoration and view it as beautiful.

Different Cultures Idea of Beauty

March 11, 2009

What do people consider beautiful? Is a women pretty if she is tall or short? Fat or skinny? Brunette or a blonde? Blue eyed or brown eyed? These are questions that girls all around the world are asking. No matter where we live or what we do people want to be beautiful. Beauty can mean many things to many different people. Some people consider beauty as being wanted or desired sexually by the opposite sex.

beautiful2People think different things make someone “beautiful.” The majority of American men think a women is beautiful if she is tan or has a “glow,” and if she has a large chest.  Westerners also view woman who are tall and slender to be beautiful.

Indian men and Chinese men view women with white features to be beautiful. One study across 37 cultures showed men desire, on average, a woman 2.5 years younger than themselves for a wife, with men in Nigeria and Zambia at the far extreme, desiring their wives to be 6.5 to 7.5 years younger.

Most cultures considered the eyes a very enchanting feature, but the people from Asia are the ones who pay the most attention to the eyes. They help exaggerate the eyes by using eyeliners and black mascara, these help complement the Oriental and Asian skin tones. Another thing that is considered very beautiful in Asian culture is the women’s skin tone. Skin tone is a very big factor in determining beauty in the Asian culture. They prefer lighter skin color. They wear lighter makeup to help make a washed out effect which enhances the eyes and the cheekbones.

Do Beautiful People Make More Money?

March 11, 2009

Do beautiful people make more money? Studies show that people who are normal or just plain looking earn 5-10 percent less than the more “beautiful” people. More attractive students get more attention from their teachers and patients that are better looking have a greater chance of recieving better treatment then normal looking patients.

business3There was a survey at London Guildhall University. 11,000 33-year-olds found that normal looking/ugly men earned 15 percent less than the more “attractive” ones. They also surveyed the women and found that the average, not so beautiful women earned 11 percent less then the more “beautiful” ones.

A study was recently done at the University of Florida and North Carolina about size. Apparently people who are tall get larger paychecks than shorter people. Every inch taller they got about 789 dollars more a year. It seems that most human will respond more favorably to beautiful people.

In 1981 and in 1988 economists did a study on women considered obese in terms of their body mass index. This study showed that the women who were obese earned about 17 percent less than the women with the normal body mass index. These statistics are shocking. Our world today is more concerned with beauty than actual ability to perform a job.

Insight into Jeffrey Dahmer

March 2, 2009

Jeffrey Dahmer is a  Milwaukee serial killer who  murdered boys of Asian and African descent. His murders were gruesome and involved torture, forced sex with dead or alive captive, dismemberment, and cannibalism.

He was arrested first when caught fondling a young 13 year old boy in Milwaukee and was sentenced to one year in a work release camp. After serving ten months, he was released on probation for his good behavior and that is when his killing spree began.  His first murder was at the age of 18, shortly after being released and his first victim was a 19 year old hitchhiker.

There was a much talked about story about a 14-year-old boy who almost escaped Dahmer in 1991. He wandered into the streets without clothes. Police believed Dahmer’s story that the boy was 19 years old and was his partner, and took the boy to Dahmer’s house. In spite of noticing a weird smell there, they left without investigating. Soon after, the boy was killed and Dahmer kept his skull as a souvenir.

Was there something in Dahmers past that made him “crazy?”…Dahmer was the son of a chemist and as a child had a fascination for dissecting dead animals and by the time he was a teenager, was an alcoholic. He dropped out of college and his father forced him to enlist in the Army. But after just two years, he was discharged because of his heavy drinking. Since he did not want to face his father, he moved in with his grandmother and lived with her for six years. His grandmother asked him to move out when he was arrested for exposing himself in public.

Dahmer was finally caught by the police when a would-be victim escaped and alerted them. He was held responsible for fifteen murders and sentenced to fifteen life terms. Dahmer then expressed remorse and wished death upon himself. He was beaten to death by a fellow inmate and died of severe head trauma. Did Dahmer deserve this kind of death, or should he have had to suffer more? I believe he got off easy.

After Dahmer was arrested his home was searched. The things that were found inside the home was astonishing. There were bodies stored in acid filled containers, dismembered body parts found scattered around the house, and wallets and his victims personal belongings. Dahmer’s residence was torn down and now the area is a vacant lot. The money from Dahmer’s estate was split up among the families of the victims.

Life as a Geisha

February 18, 2009

Geisha start out training at a very young age. The girls are usually sold into slavery by their families for money. Before becoming a real geisha one must go through vigoruos training. Some of the training occurs at a school, where the girls learn to dance, sing, and play instruments. More training occurs at the compounds they live at.

The life of a geisha is extremely tough. Once they finish their schooling they begin to enterian men in there respected villages. Their afternoons consist of the dressing process. They must pick out a kimono and then begin putting on all of their make-up. The make-up is a heavy white powder placed all over the girls face and then colored make-up is placed in other specific areas.

After the geisha are dressed they begin their long night out entertaining. The geishas go from party to party dancing, singing, and playing their instruments. Most people also think that the geisha’s perform sexual act for the men, but this is simply untrue. There probably are some geishas that have performed sexual act for people, but that is not in the geisha job description. The entertaining last until all hours of the night and then the geisha come back home and go to bed.

Today geishas are few and far between. It is now a voluntary service, the girls are no longer sold to the directors of geishas. If you want to learn more about geishas I highly recommend you read Memiors of a Geisha by Arthur Golden and The movie Memiors of a Geisha. Both the book and the movie give great insight into the life of geishas.

How Can You Kill Another Human??

February 9, 2009

What makes people kill others?  Is it genetic, hormonal, biological, or cultural conditioning? Do serial killers have any control over their actions?

Many people would say that serial killers are just crazy, and others would say that they are genetically “off.” Serial killer, Edmund Kemper says this about killing people,  “It was an urge. … A strong urge, and the longer I let it go the stronger it got, to where I was taking risks to go out and kill people — risks that normally, according to my little rules of operation, I wouldn’t take because they could lead to arrest.”

Serial killers must be insane — what normal person could slaughter another human, for the sheer pleasure of it? Yet the most chilling fact about serial killers is that they are rational and calculating. As the “British Jeffrey Dahmer“  put it, “a mind can be evil without being abnormal.” Serial killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer, Henry Lee Lucas, Ted Bundy, Herbert Mullin, Bobby Joe Long, and John Wayne Gacy have a number of excuses as to why they kill people. Some of there reasonings include their upbringing, one says that he was born with a “part” of himself missing, others blame pornography, or claim there were voices in their head telling them to kill. Obviously something is very wrong with these killers, so should they be punished for the murders they commited, or should they be sent to intense therapy in an effort to see what makes them kill?

Statistics show that most serial killers are white males from a lower-to-middle-class background, usually in his twenties or thirties. Many were physically or emotionally abused by parents. Some were adopted. As children, serial killers often set fires, torture animals, and wet their beds (these red-flag behaviors are known as the “triad” of symptoms.) Brain injuries are common. Some are very intelligent and have shown great promise as successful professionals. They are also fascinated with the police and authority in general. They have either attempted to become police themselves but were rejected, worked as security guards, or served in the military.

Why Do People Pierce Themselves?

February 6, 2009

Piercing is a ritual that has been practiced world wide for thousands of years. Many people pierce themselves for many different reasons. Some people believe that it will help them become accepted while others believe it will enhance their beauty. People also pierce themselves for their religious beliefs and because of cultural practices.

Piercing was practiced in ancient times. The Romans believed that ear lobe piercing showed how wealthy and how high of a social status you had. Thaipusam festival is a festival where Chinese people pierce themselves to show that they believe in the gods. The women pierce their cheeks and men put hooks in there back and they walk about three miles to the Thendayuthapani Temple. They do this to be accepted by others in their culture so that in other peoples eyes they will be accepted.

Tongue piercing was very common for the Mayans and Aztecs. They performed them as a ritual for their gods. They also believed that it made them more sexually appealing to the opposite sex. Women in Africa who were members of the Makololo tribe would adorn themselves by wearing plates in their upper lip. These plates called Pelele would  ”excite” the men in their tribe.

Many different cultures would have the male genitals pierced. There are many different reasons for this piercings. Some did it to keep the slaves from having sex or erections. They would also pierce males horizontally with a  ampallang through the head of the penis. This was said to bring more pleasure to both sexually partners. This piercing would take over six months to heal.

People also pierce themselves to get more attention. The more pierces a girl or boy has the more looks they will recieve. People think that piercings such as naval, ears, and lips rings will enhance their beauty. People will do whatever it takes to be excepted even if that means piercing themselves and putting themselves through pain.

Why Do People Cut Themselves?

February 6, 2009

Cutting is the act of breaking the skin with a sharp object, in an effort to make oneself bleed. Most people who cut themselves are girls, they usually start cutting  in their teens and some even continue cutting into adulthood. The cutters cut themselves on the wrist, arm, legs, or bellies.

So, the burning question is, why do people put themselves through this type of pain? Is it because it relieves stress or is it a way for them to get attention. Researchers say cutting is a way some people try to cope with the pain of strong emotions, intense pressure, or upsetting relationship problems. Others might cut themsevles to relieve  or express bad feelings, rage, sorrow, rejection, desperation, or longing.

Often times people who cut themselves do not know better ways of dealing with their problems. If these people  would talk to friends or get help from family they could potentially save themselves the pain and scarring that comes along with cutting.

This picture show a young girl expressing her feelings about herself through carving the word “ugly”  into her legs.

This picture shows the scars that occur after the self inflicted cuts have healed.

Cutting is not worth the pain one has to go through, find someone who can help with the problems instead of harming ones body.

Golden Tan vs Malignant Melanoma

February 6, 2009

In today’s world a woman is not considered “beautiful” unless her skin is golden brown. Men have placed a stereotype on women that could be harmful to the health of women. Hundreds of thousands of women lay in tanning beds everyday; some are aware of the risk they are taking and others may not realize what kind of harm is being done to their bodies. The ultra violet light that is used in tanning beds can cause serious eye problems and skin damage for women, but the most common problem is skin cancer. Skin cancer can range from basal cell carcinoma, which is serious but not deadly to malignant melanoma, which is extremely harmful.

See full size image

This is an example of basal cell carcinoma. This cancer is harmful but not deadly.

This photo shows a malignant melanoma, which is extremely harmful.

So what is the rush to ruin your skin? Why get in a bed often referred to as a “Cancer Bed”? It seems to me some woman today try too hard to fit the worlds definition of beauty, and do not worry enough about their health and well being.

How Far Will People Go to Become “Beautiful?”

February 2, 2009

What will people do to be considered beautiful? Millions of men and women all around the world are not happy with their bodies and the way they look. Everyone has a part of their body that they are unsatisified with and that they want to change. In 2007 almost 11.6 million people in the United States had cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures performed to help them become “prettier.”

The Aesthetic Society states that since 1997 the number of cosmetic procedures has increased 457 percent. This is an overwhelming number. People are desperate to “become prettier” and they will do whatever it takes to gain acceptance from others. Americans spent $13 billion on cosmetic procedures, $8.3 billion for surgical procedures, and $4.7 billion was for nonsurgical procedures.

There are also many dangers that you undertake when going through plastic surgery. The most common danger is scarring. People have died from plastic surgery. Another common risk is infection and discoloration. One huge risk that you undertake when doing facial plastic surgery is premature aging or having noticeable scar tissue.

The pressure to be “pretty” and to feel excepted is everywhere. Teens believe that plastic surgery will make them “cooler,” fit in better, and just prettier. In 2005 333,000 teens got plastic surgery.  People have forgotten what beauty really is, they believe only what they see in movies and the media, that beauty is only skin deep. This is why plastic surgery is on an continuing rise.
